Frank Jerome Davis
First Tenor
Frankie Jerome Davis was born in Portsmouth, VA, to Frankie and Elsie Davis. He is the oldest of four sons. He is married to the former Geraldine Dudley of Norfolk, VA.
Frankie began singing at the age of 5 at Pleasant Grove Holiness Church, a family church, in the Pughsville section of Suffolk, VA where his grandmother, the late David Ann Riddick, was Evangelist and his grandfather, Williarn Riddick, was Pastor.
Frankie realized that he wanted to become a famous gospel singer at the age of 14. He sang throughout middle and high school in various talent shows, pep rallies and concerts. Many students and teachers were amazed at his voice. He was often asked by several teachers to sing before the entire class; Frankie was never shy and sang with much confidence. He formed a group with two of his fellow class mates - they named thernselves The John Yeates High School Singers after the high school which they attended. In recent concerts Frankie has been fortunate enough to see his former school teachers sitting in the audience watching him sing; of course, they were very proud of his accomplishments.
Frankie began his singing career with:
The Heavenly Angeis, Suffolk, VA;
The Mighty Echoes, Suffolk, VA;
The Pearly Gates, Suffolk, VA;
The King David Harps, Portsmouth, VA;
The Voices of Hope, Portsmouth, VA
(a group which he originated);
The Original Soul Stirrers, Chicago, IL;
The Golden Gate Quartet, Paris, France
After the separation of The Voices of Hope of Portsmouth, Frankie Davis began singing solo. In 1986, he was discovered by The Famous Mighty Clouds of Joy, the gospel group from Los Angeles, CA; this group was so amazed at the voice similaritv of Frankie Davis and the Late Great Sam Cooke of the Original Soul Stirrers from Chicago, IL, that they immediately introduced Frankie to the group; at this time the Original Soul Stirrers were in need of a lead singer; out of several auditions, Frankie Davis was selected as the group's lead singer; he was later named, The Second Sam Cooke; he received several plaques and one grammy while performing with the Soul Stirrers. He sang with this group for a period of nine years.
During the spring of 1995, while in concert at his home church, New Hope Baptist which is located in the Pughsville section of Suffolk, VA, Frankie was very fortunate enough to meet the originator of The Golden Gate Quartet; the late Orlandus Wilson of Paris, France, who was so impressed with Frankie's performance that he immediately auditioned him for a first tenor position with The Golden Gate Quartet; and surely, Frankie was selected. Orlandus Wilson gave Frankie the stage name, Lover Man because he simply captivates an audience; receives high applause and long standing ovations because of his smooth style of singing. Frankie Davis is still presently singing with The Golden Gate Quartet.
